Dr Chraïbi Rim used the ETHEREA-MX® platform, with LongPulse® handpiece in Dynamics® mode
Onychomycosis is an infection caused by fungi that feed on keratin, a protein that forms most of the nails. It is more common in adults and affects toenails more, as they are more exposed to humid, dark and warm environments, ideal for the growth of fungi.
It can cause changes in the nail, such as increased thickness, yellowish or whitish color. Its treatment is difficult, is influenced by the pathogen and includes the use of nail polish, topical or systemic antifungals and local application of laser therapy.
The 1,064nm Nd:YAG laser applied with short pulses promotes angiogenesis, improving the microcirculation of the extremities, stimulates the production of collagen fibers, promotes the alteration of the wall of microorganisms, inhibiting their multiplication. It is also noted in published studies that its use in onychomycosis accelerates nail growth, and the accumulation of heat may be related to its effectiveness.
The LongPulse® handpiece is compatible with the ETHEREA-MX® and ZYE® platforms. It has 4 spot sizes for treatment at different depths. It works with long pulses (in milliseconds) and short pulses (microseconds), expanding its indication for treatments that range from epilation and thermal peeling to help with onychomycosis.
In case 1, Dr. Rim performed 2 sessions with a 30-day interval and in case 2, only 1 session. She used the same parameters in both.
