Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIPH) is an undesirable effect that can occur after inflammation or prior skin
injury, especially in sensitive skin or darker skin types. It manifests as dark spots in the treated areas, resulting from the
inflammatory stimulus caused by the micro-perforations in the skin.
In this case, the patient developed hyperpigmented brown macules and atrophic scars after undergoing a fractional
microneedling radiofrequency session performed by a medical professional.
In the treatment of secondary PIH following microneedling, depigmenting dermocosmetics, chemical peels, and light
and laser-based technologies can be used. The combination of Intense Pulsed Light, in lower phototypes, and the
Nd:YAP 1,340 nm laser stands out for acting synergistically: aiming to regulate superficial pigmentation through
selective photothermolysis and simultaneously stimulating deep dermal repair, improving skin texture.
In this case, a single session was performed using a combination of IPL-Sq® intense pulsed light handpieces and
ProDeep® non-ablative Nd:YAP 1340 nm laser, compatible with the ETHEREA-MX® and ZYE® platforms, in addition to at-
home treatment with a medical-grade skincare routine. Together, these technologies, combined with at-home care,
provide a more effective, uniform, and safe treatment for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
